Training On Wards 4

We offer 84 FY1 and 70 FY2 trainee placements across the King's sites. Both years consist of three four-month rotations. All FY2 rotations include an Emergency Department placement.

We support you every step of the way. You will have an Educational Supervisor for the year as well as a nominated Clinical Supervisor on a day to day basis. Also available to guide you are the Foundation Programme Directors. The programme is supported by the Foundation Programme Training team who you can contact for advice and assistance.

Foundation Programme ePortfolio

As a foundation doctor you will be putting all your medical school teaching into practice and developing your clinical knowledge, skills and general approach to patients and colleagues.

To chart your progress, this all has to be documented by means of your ePortfolio. This paperless portfolio keeps all your meetings, assessments, multi-source feedback, achievements and reflective practice in one place.

ePortfolio provides a secure password-controlled environment in which you store evidence that is accessible to your foundation tutor and supervisors at any time, allowing them to support your development and progress.

Local swaps

You can swap rotations by putting your request in writing to the Foundation Programme Training team. Please discuss this first with your Educational Supervisor. 

Assessments

Foundation Trainees are assessed in the clinical workplace as part of the ongoing assessment programme. Feedback about assessments and reflective practice, supported by an Educational Supervisor, are important aspects of this. The Foundation Programme website has more about each type of assessment. 

Taster days

Tasters are five days from your FY2 study leave allowance that give you the chance to experience a specialty of your choice to help you decide your career. Discuss your options with your Educational Supervisor to ensure you choose an appropriate one.

Your taster days can be arranged by the Foundation Programme Training team. If you decide to do them at another Trust, you can arrange them yourself.

You need to fill in a Taster Request Form which should be signed by both you and your Educational Supervisor and sent to the Foundation Programme Training team.

After your placement you complete a Taster Feedback Form in your ePortfolio. This outlines how helpful you felt it was and whether it met your objectives.

Development Funds

This fund provides up to £250 towards the cost of courses, presentations or conferences that advance the development your medical career. 

To apply, contact the Foundation Programme Training team with details of the cost of the course you want to attend and a letter of support from your Educational Supervisor. Your application is then presented to the monthly Doctors' Mess Committee meeting for approval.

King's & STFS Merits Awards

At the end of each year the PGMDE hosts an awards ceremony celebrating the achievements of FY1s and FY2s during their year at King's. There are awards in areas such as team work, audits, teaching, leadership and ePortfolio completion.

Trainees can also nominate Trainers of the Year, a great accolade for those trainers who have shown commitment and worked hard to support them.
